University of Udine and B.M. Birla Science Centre are the main partners of the projects.
The University of Udine was established in 1978 in order to foster higher education in innovative sectors (e.g. informatics, preservation of cultural artifacts, food technologies) as well as cultural renovation and technological innovation in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Friuli Venezia Giulia, a region in the north-eastern part of Italy, had just been hit by a dramatic earthquake and for the past 50 years had been known mostly for its high rate of emigration. Since 1980, Friuli, together with the rest of north-eastern Italy, has experienced an extraordinary phase of economic growth, probably capitalising on the fine grained texture of its economy, made up mostly of family-run small enterprises. At the same time, Udine University has increased significantly its impact and it has made a considerable reputation for itself, both in research and teaching. It can now be considered among the top fifteen universities in Italy.
The B.M. Birla Science Centre is a Birla Group non-profit institution, based in Hyderabad, for the dissemination of science. Andhra Pradesh is one of India’s emerging states in the high technology sector which can play a key role in the world’s knowledge economy because of the high skill of its human resources. Its capital, Hyderabad lies at one end of the so-called “Indian Silicon Valley”, whose other end is Bangalore. The B.M. Birla Science Centre is recognized by the Government as an Institute of Higher Education (Government Order 259 dated 11 July 1986) and a Scientific Laboratory for Advancement of Technology, Research and Development (Government Order 42 dated 22 August 1994). It hosts a unique hands-on science museum, a planetarium, a dinosarium, an archaeological museum and an art gallery on contemporary Indian painting. Its hosts also start-up companies in IT and web enabled services. A branch of the centre is based in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan.
